VW Group on top in 12 of 21 European segments

VW brand accounted for seven of those segment No. 1s; Audi was tops in two.

    The VW Tiguan was Europe's top-selling compact SUV through February.

    Volkswagen Group continued its strong start to 2023, taking the top slot in 12 out of 21 European segments through February.

    Brands from Europe's largest automaking group were No. 1 in eight volume segments and four premium segments tracked by Automotive News Europe and market researcher Dataforce.

    VW brand accounted for seven of the segment No. 1s, according to Dataforce's preliminary data, which represents about 94 percent of sales in the European Union plus ETFA countries and the U.K.

    The winners for VW included the Golf (compact), Tiguan (compact SUV), T-Roc (small SUV and coupe/convertible) and the Caddy (compact vans).

    The midsize/large SUV segment was led by the Kodiaq from VW sister brand Skoda.

    In the premium segments, VW Group subsidiaries Audi, Porsche and Lamborghini were No. 1 in a categories including large premium (Audi A6), luxury sedan (Porsche Taycan) and exotic (Lamborghini Urus).

    Tesla's shows its dominance

    The Tesla Model Y was Europe's No. 1 selling full-electric model through two months of 2023 while the Ford Kuga was the top-selling plug-in hybrid.

    Tesla has increased sales of the Model Y by nearly 250 percent this year to 24,307 units.

    That volume is nearly as many units as the combined sales of the Nos. 2 - 4 on Europe's list of top 10-selling of EVs.

    The VW ID4, ID3 and Dacia Spring accounted for 25,213 sales during the same period.

    The plug-in hybrid sector's No. 2-seller was the Volvo XC60, which edged ahead of the Lynk & CO 01, which was followed by its platform mate, the Volvo XC40.

    The XC60 was Europe's best-selling premium PHEV through February, according to Dataforce's numbers.

    Overall sales of full-electric cars rose 22 percent to 202,370 after two months.

    The plug-in hybrid sector was down 8.7 percent to 122,940 after two months of 2023.
