VW launches ID4 X and ID4 Crozz output in China

    The ID4 X rolled off the production line this week at a new EV assembly plant at SAIC-VW.

    Volkswagen has begun mass production of two variants of the ID4 full-electric compact crossover at the automaker's two Chinese joint ventures.

    The ID4 X rolled off the production line this week at a new EV assembly plant in Shanghai, according to SAIC-VW, VW Group’s joint venture with SAIC Motor Corp.

    The 17 billion yuan ($2.5 billion) factory, in the joint venture’s production center in Shanghai’s suburban Jiading district, is dedicated to building vehicles developed on VW Group’s MEB modular EV platform. 

    The plant can produce up to 300,000 vehicles a year, said SAIC-VW, which produces and markets vehicles under the VW and Skoda brands. 

    FAW-VW, VW’s partnership with China FAW Group, said this week it started mass production of the ID4 Crozz at a production center in the south China city of Foshan in September. 

    The Foshan manufacturing site can also assemble 300,000 EVs a year at full capacity, according to FAW-VW, which assembles and distributes vehicles for VW and Audi marques.

    The ID4 X and ID4 Crozz are both 1,852 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2,765 mm each. 

    But the ID4 X is slightly longer and taller than the ID4 Crozz: 4,612 mm vs. 4,592 mm in length, and 1,640 mm vs. 1,629 mm in height, according to information SAIC-VW and FAW-VW filed this year with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which regulates China’s auto industry. 

    The ID4 is the first MEB-based product VW Group has produced in China. VW has not indicated when the two models will go on sale domestically.
