BERLIN -- Former Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess will take over as chairman of the Board of Directors at The Mobility House, a Munich-based startup specializing in charging solutions and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology.

Diess succeeds Alexander Landia, who will remain active on the board, the company said in a statement.

V2G allows electric vehicles equipped with bidirectional charging capabilities to both charge from and discharge electricity back to the grid.

When connected to the grid, EVs can provide stored energy back to the grid during peak demand periods or when additional power is required, contributing to grid stability.

The Mobility House, founded in 2009, says it works with more than 15 automakers and 150 energy suppliers.

"The latest electric cars are already V2G-capable," Diess said in the statement. "I look forward to shaping and accelerating this disruptive change in the energy ecosystem together with The Mobility House."

Some of the VW models planned under his leadership now have a bidirectional charging function.

The Mobility House markets around 4,500 stationary 1st and 2nd life vehicle batteries in Germany, France and the Netherlands.

These batteries are used in energy and power markets as well as in various products.

In June 2023, the company announced a partnership with Renault Group brand Mobilize to offer a V2G service starting in 2024, beginning in France, Germany and the U.K.

At the end of the year, the California Energy Commission (CEC), granted a $2.9 million award to a project team led by The Mobility House to implement 12 bidirectional chargers at four California school locations.

The company also manages more than 1,700 charging locations worldwide with its Charge-Pilot charging and energy management system.

This year, the company plans to launch the first commercial V2G offer on the European market, together with Renault subsidiary Mobilize.

Diess has also been a member of Infineon's supervisory board since the beginning of 2023.

Diess left VW Group in September 2022, three years before his contract was supposed to end, following a tumultuous four-year tenure at the automaker. He was replaced by Porsche chief Oliver Blume.
