The 408 has a flowing and aerodynamic line that gives it a distinctive silhouette, while still retaining some popular SUV characteristics such as a high ground clearance, big wheels and black plastic body cladding.

PARIS -- Peugeot’s 408 coupe-style compact hatchback is joining a growing number of similar models from mainsteam brands, as automakers try to offer an alternative to SUVs, traditional hatchbacks or stations wagons.

The 408, shown to the public for the first time at the Paris auto show, joins the Renault Arkana crossover, the Volkswagen Taigo crossover and the Citroen C4 X compact. All those cars have been launched in the last year.

The Arkana, built in South Korea, has been a surprise hit for Renault, with about 100,000 orders since its launch in early 2021.
