PARIS -- New-car registrations in France rose by 3.8 percent in August, the first increase since November 2021, with big gains at Ford, Fiat, Opel and Nissan.

There were 91,406 sales in the month, according to trade association PFA, on 22 selling days, the same as in August 2021.

The month’s winners among brands with significant volume were Ford (up 46 percent), Fiat (+45 percent), Opel (+37 percent) and Nissan (+34 percent).

Stellantis posted a strong showing on the group level, with a gain of 14 percent on increases from Fiat, Opel, Peugeot (+14 percent) and Citroen (+7.3 percent). Renault Group was down 4.6 percent, as a 13 percent gain at Dacia could not offset a 15 percent decline at Renault brand.

Through eight months, the market is down by 14 percent, although the monthly decline has been narrowing in recent months, with automakers expressing optimism that the semiconductor supply crunch is easing.
