Within its state-of-the-art Battery Testing Center TÜV Rheinland provides a comprehensive service portfolio for validation and type testing along the value chain of vehicle battery systems. All services are offered in one location in the German-Dutch business park Avantis in Aachen-Heerlen in the heart of Europe.

The 2.000 square meter facility was used for solar-testing before and is currently in the re-construction phase to meet the all latest testing standards and will be fully operational by Q1 of 2022. The construction of an additional facility with a large-scale bunker as part of an abuse center will start from Q3 2021 and be completed by Q3 2022.

Below sketch shows the layout of the three facilities and the location of the state-of-the-art equipment, benches and chambers.

Together with the leading equipment manufacturers, we have designed a state-of-the-art Battery Testing Center. It features a comprehensive testing portfolio, high flexibility and strong performance data. More details on the detailed test bench specifications are available here.

What kind of vehicle batteries can be tested?

The cells, modules and packs can be tested under different test scenarios with almost all conceivable requirements. The testing facility is designed to meet customer specific- requirements from cell level to large battery pack.

    • Dimensions: Large batteries with more than 2.3 m x 1.6 m can be tested (L x W)
      •  Weight: Our test benches can handle heavy battery systems up to 800 kg without technical limitations
      •  Power: Our power electronics can provide up to 500 kW of current (up to 1,200 V; 1,000 A)
      •  Sample Testing: From prototype to D sample

What battery standards can be tested?

The TÜV Rheinland Battery Testing Center provides the most important international testing standards for batteries on site. These include, among others, the ECE R 100, UN 38.3 and LV124.

    ECE R100

The ECE R100 certification is one of the most important European requirements for the approval of electric road vehicles, because the regulation specifies all the tests that must be performed on batteries installed in electric vehicles of category N and M with electric traction.

    UN38.3

Before lithium cells/batteries are allowed to be transported at all, they must successfully pass certain tests. These tests simulate transportation conditions such as pressure, temperature, crushing, impact, etc. These tests are described in a manual of the United Nations.

    LV124

The LV 124 standard specifies the requirements, test conditions and tests for electrical, electronic and mechatronic components and systems for use in motor vehicles up to 3.5t.

What kind of battery tests can be performed as of today?

    Battery abuse center
For performance of abuse tests (e.g. internal fire propagation, nail-penetration on cell and module level)

Battery tester for packs and cells
    Battery tester for packs (1,000 V and 600 A)

    Test benches
Various test benches (e.g. drop, nail-penetration, crush)

    Climate chamber
In our climate chamber for traction batteries we can perform tests up to 40 m³ ; -30°C to +80°C

    Climate and temperature chambers
Various climate and temperature chambers for components

    Shaker
    Shaker up to 30 kg

The very short cycles in the development of innovative battery technologies - and the revision of regulatory requirements mean that testing and homologation requirements for safeguarding battery systems are also subject to constant development.

TÜV Rheinland´s three-part webinar series prepares you already today for tomorrow's challenges around the topic of safeguarding battery systems in the automotive context:

    1)    New battery technologies and the potential impact on testing needs.

Batteries as structural components or part of the vehicle crash structure, all-solid-state and cell-to-pack batteries, in addition to the continuous development of pure cell chemistry, are current change drivers that will also impact test requirements and, in particular, test procedures. In this webinar, we will analyze the key trends and their impact on vehicle battery protection.

This webinar has already taken place at:
    •    Thursday, June 10, 2021
    •    10:00 am - 11:00 am

You can still register for the full series and get access to the presentation of the first webinar, if you use the link below.

    2)    Destructive testing on vehicle batteries.

Destructive tests on vehicle batteries are among the most complex and costly tests. However, they also provide essential information on the behavior of the systems in the field and are therefore already necessary during development. We provide answers to questions about the necessity, possibilities and alternatives for safeguarding vehicle batteries.

    Date

    •    10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

    3)    Type approval ECE R100 Rev. 3.

On 09.06.2021, revision 3 of ECE R100 will come into force. Our webinar answers the most important questions: What are the core differences to revision 2? What impact will it have on the testing process and, if applicable, testing capacities? What are the opportunities for the homologation process?

    Date
    •    Thursday, 05 August 2021
