BMW and Mercedes-Benz gained ground on rivals in July; Audi, Renault and Tesla suffered sales declines; China's MG and BYD became one of Europe's top 20 and top 30 sellers, respectively; and there were nearly as many sales losers as sales winners in a month when overall volume increased less than 0.4 percent.
Those were some of the key takeaways from the July figures from market researcher Dataforce.
BMW's 13 percent sales increase to 63,622 boosted it to No. 3 overall in July from No. 5 during the same month last year, pushing it ahead of Audi and Skoda, according to Dataforce's figures, which include sales in the European Union, the EFTA countries and the U.K.
BMW was helped by sales increases of 30 percent to 4,453 for the full-electric iX1 premium compact SUV and a 17 percent gain to 3,991 for the i4 midsize premium sedan.
Mercedes' 12 percent sales increase to 59,573 boosted it to No. 5 overall in July from No. 6 during the same month last year, also moving it ahead of Audi, according to Dataforce.
