Chinese electric vehicle brand Nio is rolling out one of the most daring services for EV customers since Tesla began building its high-speed Supercharger network: battery swapping.
Nio has installed 850 swapping stations in China and, in January, opened its first of 12 planned stations in Norway, the country from which it is planning a wider European sales push. Renault is also considering battery swapping.
The idea behind the technology of removing a piece of vehicle hardware might sound strange to consumers accustomed to refueling their vehicles in a few minutes at a gas pump. But Espen Byrjall, power and operations manager for Nio Norway, explained how one of Nio's Power Swap Stations works.
