Europe August sales by brand and model: Maserati, Land Rover report strong gains

Lynk & CO, Genesis, Cupra and Alfa Romeo also had big increases, while two brands were below the market but still recorded gains.

    Land Rover's sales rose 31 percent in August on strong demand for the Discovery Sport, which recorded a 32 percent gain to 730 units.

    Lynk & CO, Genesis, Mahindra and Maserati had triple-digit sales gains in August. Meanwhile, Cupra, Alfa Romeo, MG, Rolls-Royce, Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz were among the 20 brands that had double-digit percentage increases in an overall European market that was up by 3 percent.

    Volvo Cars subsidiary Lynk & CO, which focuses on car subscriptions rather than sales, had a strong month with 2,114 registrations of its 01 plug-in hybrid, up from just 605 last year as it was entering the market.

    Hyundai Group's luxury brand Genesis was up 145 percent to 245 registrations compared with just 100 during August 2021, also because it was just starting to enter the market.

    Maserati increased sales 123 percent to 414, of which the new Grecale premium midsize SUV accounted for 65 percent, according to figures from market researcher Dataforce.

    Cupra was up 57 percent, helped by strong demand for the Born electric compact, which accounted for 2,879 sales. That represented 30 percent of the Volkswagen Group subsidiary's sales last month.

    Alfa Romeo rose 56 percent because of the arrival of the Tonale premium compact SUV, which accounted for 930 sales last month.

    MG increased sales 42 percent to 5,592. This was driven by surging demand for the MG 5 compact station wagon.

    Also among the brands that recorded gains during the month were Rolls-Royce and Land Rover (both +31 percent), Mercedes-Benz (+21 percent),d Dacia (+17 percent) and Ford (+11 percent), according to Dataforce.

    Brands that recorded gains but were below the market average were Audi (+2.8 percent) and Hyundai (+1.9 percent).
